Essay 1-02a: University Life

Do you smoke on campus? A lot of students smoke. Each university has various policies about smoking now. There are the university enforcing separation of smoking areas, and the one enforcing total ban on smoking. Kumamoto Gakuen University has some smoking spaces in campus. The problem is that smoking in the university increases the chance that minors smokes. In Japan, minors' smoking is banned by the law. However, they can be done it at many universities.

First of all, smoking is bad for health. Minors' smoking especially decreases ability to move, and influences the growth of the body harmfully. And it influences nonsmoker harmfully. Moreover, it is said that the smoke rising from the cigarette is more harmful than the smoke that the smoker inhales. This is true for not only minors but also all the people.

Next, the cigarette is costly. It is about 300 yen a box perhaps. If money earned by the part-time job is spent to buy the cigarette, students should quiet them job and betake themselves to studying. And, even minors can easily buy the cigarette in the convenience store. The adult passes over their doing so.

Some of the smokers of students say that they got to smoke after they entered the university. That reason is various. But most of students said that "Because friends and acquaintances are smoking." They think that their smoking is natural. This clarifies that the chance that they smoke increased than when they were in the high school or the junior high school. It is because the universities are allowing smoking.

To the nonsmokers, smoking doesn't have a merit. It is the same to the smoker. I think smoking is not necessary to the university. However, if the university doesn't have smoking places, students would smoke anywhere. So, some university has it. I think it is wrong that Japanese students are in such a tendency. Smoking is the issue in the public domain now. We should think about that problem within the small ambit like a university first of all.
